This is a hungry-man crew and I knew I couldn't control them without
food. Sorry for the chew and s-rew, but the clams were great, and
thanks to Bob for getting us there. A bunch of us continued up to
Hampton Beach and then home. Sorry we couldn't stay for the burgers.
Thanks again.

Below is the "rough" route that I have planned out for our monthly ride
that is this Saturday, April 24th to Laconia. I am not sure what time to
leave, maybe 8 or 9 AM? This route mainly uses 107 to get to our
destination, and it is by no means the most direct nor fastest way to
Laconia. I have been on this route last year and it took a while to get
there, so I would say the earlier, the better. But heck, it may rain or be
too cold. Oh well, cross out fingers!

	 Start:

1) Right out of Exxon Station onto Route 1 north

2) Left on S. Main St.

3) Continue on Main St. to Route 97 north

4) Left on Route 97 north in Georgetown

5) Left on Route 97/113 north in Haverill

6) Right on Route 125 north in Haverill to Plaistow, NH

7) Left on Route 107 north in Kingston

8) Left on Route 107 north in Raymond

9) Plan A: Left on Route 202 west to Epsom traffic circle (fast food,
restaurants, gas)
Take 28 north to Route 107 north in Pittsfield

Plan B: Right on Route 202 east.
		 Left on Route 107 north.

10) Continue on Route107 north to Laconia.

11) Right on Route 107 north/Court St./Route 11A

12) Continue on Route 107 north/DW Highway

13) Left on Route 3 north/DW Highway

14) Right on Wiers Boulevard.

Return:

Plan A: The same way we came.

Plan B: Route 3 west to Tilton (outlet shopping?), then I-93 south to Mass.

Hi, Everyone!

Arlene's 1st ride

Yesterday was Arlene's *first ride*! We left from Cycles128 at lunchtime,
and went to the Clam Box in Ipswich w/ members of 239 & 291. She enjoyed the
ride, but is still a little scared of being on the bike. Hopefully, I'll be
able to win her over completely! She had 'helmet hair' and I thought she
really looked kinda cute wearing my Star hat.

I was ecstatic!

Bob & Cheryl, it's your turn....

;-)

Kudos to Anthony for doing a great job yesterday setting up and putting up
with all sorts of aggravations, both from Cycles128 and others. Anthony is
doing a fabulous job of marketing the chapter, and I am somewhat amazed at
his talents and flair for marketing and public relations. We are getting
more members almost every day, it seems!

Amanda is also to be commended for; a) putting up with Anthony, b) putting
up with *me*, and c) making signs and being a great hostess for the Star240
table yesterday!

It's a shame more members of our own chapter weren't there, because all in
all it was a very fun day!

WebGuy's update

Now, I know I forgot to update something on the web site. I can't remember
what it was, though. If anyone remembers, please give me some direction!

View from the Tail(gunner)

All *three* rides yesterday were exceptional, IMHO.

The first ride from Cycles128 through Ipswich and back was led by DHLBob,
and we enjoyed some great roads and some fantastic views! It was good to get
out and ride as a group and also have some new riders with us.

The second ride was a bit hectic, because the 239 & 291 riders were getting
hungry, and the Cycles128 BBQ wasn't even started. So, a decision was made
to go to the Clam Box, and Arlene was gently coerced into her first ride!
Riders left the Cycles128 parking lot haphazardly but finally gelled as a
group, eventually being led by an Essex County Sheriff for most of the way
there! The clams were good, and we didn't have to wait too long to eat.
Unfortunately, both the 239 & 291 contingents split from the Clam Box and
never got to go back to Cycles128. Anthony and another member of their
chapter were both disappointed when they didn't return.

It's a great feeling to be in the back of a ride, and seeing all the bikes
snake their way along the route. I had my hands full, but I was *really*
enjoying have my bride on the back of my bike!

I waited at Cycles128 for a rider to return for a ride, but he never showed.
Bob & I took off for the third ride and we ended up at Odiorne Point in Rye
Beach, NH. Great roads, and great views! We also passed silently by the site
of the Atlantic Cable Crossing In Rye;
http://www.iscpc.org/information/narhist.htm, one leg of the global
crossing...

Until next time...

We wanted to thank chapter 240 for your hospitality. Anthony, it was
wonderful talking with your daughter Amanda, who was very
knowledgeable about everything that was going on. It's nice to have
active Star Teens. Way to go, Amanda!! We had a great time browsing
the dealership. Sorry we didn't stay for the burgers but that
Fisherman's platter was great. Guess I blew the diet on that one. Oh
well! Can't turn down clams, scallops, shrimp and the fish! Oh yes,
the onion rings were just to wash the other things done. Thanks Bob
and Leni for leading us to the Clam Box and Hampton Beach. I
understand everybody made it back safe, which makes it an
outstanding day.

How does one go about setting up an SSB or an LSB?

I would like to have one at the Sylvan Street Grille in Danvers, on one of
these dates;

August 8th

August 22nd

August 29th

September 26th

I would need a head count so I could reserve a semi-private area. Brunch
costs about $11 per person.

Let me know...

OK, Star 240!

I need a head count for all that will be accompanying me on the Pioneer
Valley RIMBY - May 1st.

I need a head count for the lunch stop at Bub's BBQ, and for planning
purposes.

Please see http://www.star240.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=74 to take the

w/us. If so then 7:20 AM at the 1st rest area on Rt 2 W right after 495
(think it is just after exit 39 on 2 W) would be a good place, providing
that you are going that route also. From that rest area to Belchertown is
about 60 mi. For my group there are other optional routes, such as
495->290->9 or even Mass Pike. But I think 495->2->202 is a good
combination of speed, time and scenery making the ride to the PV RIMBY
enjoyable.
>

This depends on the response I get from my group. I will probably meet you
at the rest area either way. I had thought about going via the Mass. Pike,
but since I am the only one that has a "Fast Pass" and I do not mind
super-slabbing it (remember the 9/11 ride?), I had to reconsider the route.
You are, of course, correct in your assumption that the '495->2->202' route
is a better route for all. I am planning on leaving from the Ferncroft Mobil
On The Run @ 431 Newbury St., Danvers @ 6:15 AM, if anyone would like to
join me from the area. I will be travelling south on 95 (or 1)->128S->2W and
should arrive at the rest area at approx. 7:15 AM. We'll meet there, and we
should probably gas up as soon as we arrive in <Burp>--uh, Belchertown.

>
> - Since the meeting time has been moved up to 8:00 AM w/the last group
leaving by 9 I am presuming that when we show at 9 that there will still be
a group there, right? What I'm saying is that I hope they don't start at 8,
space out the groups accordingly and find themselves ahead of schedule and
the last group leaves earlier than 9.
>

There will still be a group there.

>
> - If we show for the last group leaving at 9 I am presuming that there
will be enough road captains that will know the route. That Delphi posting
said something about possibly breaking it up into even more groups.

There should be enough Road Captains.

change. I didn't see anything in that Delphi posting about a change in the
route.

Yes, that note stated the start time was an hour earlier (8AM instead of
9AM)...

3, or 4...

;-)

We'll be home 'before dark' in either case...

addr any of my concerns directly w/the PV RIMBY people. Thx.

You're always welcome to address the NERds directly, if you wish. They're
not a bad bunch, and they share similar ideals with the NERIN group.

Hey!

Is anyone from Star240 going???

I am leaving from the Mobil station on Rt. 1 in Danvers/Topsfield promptly
at 6:15AM (meet there @ 6 AM).

I have only had *one* response from Star240 so far, and that was from
Anthony telling me he couldn't go because he has Amanda this weekend.

How about a response?

Pat

Hi Panda...
Thanks for your marketing wizardry! To put the NERIN, Chap. 240, Chap.
291, and other East Coast riders at ease we will definitely have ride
leaders available for their group(s) AND we will wait for their arrival
regardless of how many groups get out before 9:00. I currently have 8
leaders who've pre-ridden the route. 3 are already assigned and 1 may
take a spirited group if enough riders express interest in that, and
another, RZeus, is planning on a pre-ride during the week.
Directions will be available and I will be placing signs at strategic
turns along the route on Friday. No worries, mates! :) The NER'ds have
bellied-up in a big way on this one and we will be happy to accommodate.
I will be at the start until all who have responded arrives and departs
with a leader. It is likely that I will lead the last group and, likely
as well, that it will be after 9:00. No problems, no rush.

Do we need a mailing list?

Maintaining the members@star240.com email address has to be done manually,
and is limited to the number of email addresses supported.

Mass emails can be sent from our forum, but currently only by the admin (uh,
that would be *me*). I can change it so that anyone can send mass emails,
but the possibility of abuse is too high...

A mailing list, such as a majordomo list, is an added cost but yields
benefits to the membership such as indexing (archiving) and other features.

Thoughts? Comments? Concerns?

No we don't need added costs or added abuse.
Abuse at a cost is also not good.
I can set up my own list in outlook and add members to it.
And we should get used to just using the Star240 forum instead of email.
it is less annoying.
I get way too many emails as it is.
I'd rather check the forum daily.

I think this should be on the agenda for the next meeting;

All communication is done via the forum. Y/N?

I think it's a good idea.

Sunday's ride to Wachusett Mountain and Pack Monadnock is a 'GO' and the
weather looks STELLAR! It may become a TRIPLE peaks ride if there's
enough interest! Departure from Denny's in Lexington @ 9AM on Sunday.

How many are planning to go? I'd like a headcount as soon as possible.

I'm also leading an Ice Cream Ride tonight from Cycles 128 in Beverly,
with 4 - $25 gift certificates to give away, courtesy of Cycles128!
7PM departure...
This event will repeat every Thursday...
...weather permitting, of course.
This event is sponsored by Cycles128, and all are welcomed and invited.
Bring your friends!

The trimount is probably going to be a twin peaks ride after all...

I made it all the way to the top of the three mountains, but the last one didn't
go all they way to the top, and left about a half-mile to hike up to the
summit...

I think if we do the twin peaks, and then head back after pack monadnock it
should be a fun ride...

There's a subway at the mobil station so we can pick up a light lunch or maybe
we'll stop at the rib place or maybe stop at the dog joint or maybe all three...

The road to the top of Mt. Wachusett is not too steep, and the view was
absolutely stellar today.

The road up to the pack is of better quality, but is extremely steep and has
numerous hairpin turns, and reminded me of a slightly toned down Hurricane Mt.
Road. This road can be scary...
...but if you take it slow you should be all set.

So, who's going tomorrow?

The day started out beautifully; I was late starting out, and Anthony
was late to arrive. It all worked out well, because Bob Nicoll was the
first to actually *apologize* for being late. I accepted his apology
even though he was *early*!

There were 6 people on 5 bikes departing the Exxon station as I showed
them a "motorcyclist's shortcut" that took an extra 20 minutes. We
passed behind the Alfalfa winery and rode by Connemara House before
turning onto River Rd. We then proceeded down towards the HRC and took
another quick shortcut to Rt. 95S. I guess we went a little too slow, so
next time I'll pick up the pace a bit.

We met Gar and Jason at Denny's, and waited another minute for Ravin to
join us. We were now 9 people on 8 bikes as we headed out to Mt.
Wachusett.

I was more than pleasantly surprised to see BobcatBob, Doug & Jane,
Barry, and 'da Dawg' waiting for us when we arrived. We were now 14
people on 12 bikes as we ascended to the first summit.

The view from the top was fabulous, and we were soon itching for more
scenery and riding. I set my radio to "stun" and we headed down the
mountain...

As we pulled into the Mobil/Dunkin Donuts/Subway, my thoughts were on
the mountain up ahead. Barry and Dawg had other plans, though. Dawg left
to go play with his wife, and Barry left too. Where did I go wrong?

Anyway, we were now 12 people on 10 bikes as we left with our
mountaintop snacks and headed to our rib adventure. A short way down the
road, we turned into Little Anthony's Fish Market and BBQ. The ribs were
great, and we ate our fill and some had strawberry shortcake for
dessert!

We decided to forego the hot dog joint, but it is not to be missed on
future excursions. The dogs are $1 each, including toppings.

We arrived at Pack Monadnock, and stopped so I could give a cautionary
statement before we ascended to the summit. The road was in excellent
condition, but was quite steep with many 180 degree turns, known as
hairpins by some....

I was really afraid that someone might go down, which is why I gave the
cautionary statement. I was glad to see that everybody made it up
safely, however. We did have someone go down, but it wasn't while
riding, thank God!

We decided to forego the third summit with all of it's black flies and
the half-mile hike to the top, and opted instead to head for home.

We left and headed down Rt. 123 in a southeasterly direction. Gar took
over sometime after we entered Taxachusetts and led us through a ROAD
CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC route over a bridge. We took the sidewalk...

We ended up having ice cream in Carlisle, which was very good, and the
he led us through another ROAD CLOSED to Rt. 129.

Riders began to peel away after that, beginning with Gar.

Everyone made it home safely, and the ride was a success. I will do this
ride again!

Well, it looks like that Tyler Hamilton idiot woman, Laura Nadolski, is
trying to apologize for leaving you guys in the lurch but at the same time
it looks like she's trying to blame Bobcat Bob for not passing on the
message she supposedly left on his answering machine. She alleges that she
called him and told him it was cancelled.

She is totally confused about our Chapter numbers, too. ;-)

I know I'm not alone in thinking she just wanted to "use" us.

So far, I have held off on writing a story for publication on
BostonBiker.com about this "biker abuse". I'm still thinking I should not
write it...
...but that could change.

I still wouldn't rush to make any commitments to *this* organization, but I
will continue to make commitments to other organizations that recognize the
contributions made by bikers. On the other hand, I will continue to refuse
to participate in any "charity event" that places the lives of bikers at
risk and are only interested in getting our money (like the MSPCA Rock Run).
This particular organization collected our money, and then "led" us on a
ride on Rt. 495 and Rt. 95 at speeds *in excess* of 80 mph with *no* police
presence. At the ride's terminus, we were again largely ignored and there
were further attempts to collect money from those *left alive* after the
"run". Never again...
